For some jobs, a medical exam is necessary to before starting the job. This is called a pre-employment assessment, or pre-employment check.
Pre-employment checks are designed so your employer knows you can safely perform the duties of the job, and are often legal requirements. Not everybody needs to do a pre-employment check, and your employer will let you know if you do.
What’s do they test in a pre-employment check ?
Each assessment is different depending on the type of job you’re applying for, for example mining, heavy vehicle driving, and Category 3 Railway Safety medicals to name a few. The pre-employment checks are tailored according to the job. They usually start with a questionnaire about your medical history, and then a physical exam, which may include :
Functional assessments (including grip strength)
Audiometry/tympanometry
Spirometer
Vision test
ECG
Drug screen – urine, blood test, or chain of custody drug test
